Does every tourist’s prejudice reduce thanks to tourism?

We can see inhumane attitudes and behaviors that deeply affect society such as prejudice, discrimination and hostility in many societies around the world. Opposite poles such as black and white, east-west, north-south, rich-poor, Muslim-Christian have been formed. The main reason of this is the lack of communication and prejudice between communities. If people can somehow interact face-to-face that time the prejudice, discrimination and hostility will be reduced. In this case, the tourism sector can play a very important role. People can meet and recognize different languages, religions and races by tourism. By this way, they can see that they are like themselves while they have seen as “others” before. In addition, the differences decrease and the similarities increase. Although there are many studies investigating this, the researches that answer the following question are quite limited.

Does everyone’s prejudice reduce thanks to tourism? Of course NO.

The level of satisfaction that tourists perceive from local people and other destination elements where they go, their personality characteristics (neurotic, extraversion etc.), worldview (fascist, democrat or liberal etc.), travel motivations etc. can be effective. Therefore, destination marketers and policy makers should ensure tourist satisfaction. They should also take into account tourist motivation and destination characteristics. They should try to attract tourists who are suitable for their destination. The communication and interaction should be opened by making sure that the tourists come into contact with the local people and participate in the cultural activities. When creating travel routes and preparing package tours, attention should be paid to activities that can keep tourists on destination for a long time.
