One Love Peace Ambassador Pledge

The adapted pledge came about with an introduction to Dr Clifton Reid by Diana McIntyre-Pike about three years ago. Subsequently, I met with the Hanover Peace Coalition board and revised my original pledge to incorporate their vision, which is stated below.

The pledge was first publicly presented at the Peace Day Ceremony in Mandeville in the presence of
Dr Lou D’Amore at the International Peace Day Civic Ceremony at the Mandeville Peace Park (Brooks Park) September 21, 2016. Mandeville became the first Peace town in the Caribbean. At that event, Dr Reid was presented with the first One LovePeace Ambassador Certificate.

Most recently Dr Lou D’Amore, Founder/President of IIPT and Diana McIntyre-Pike were presented with certificates at the November 2018 staging of the IIPT International Community Tourism Conference hosted at the UWI Mona Campus.

Persons who want to become One Love Peace Ambassadors must first apply through an organization to Manchester Peace Coalition and or through Sharon Parris-Chambers. Their community project has to be approved and recorded, and observed before they are awarded with a signed award certificate.

One Love Peace Ambassador Pledge

For Manchester Peace Coalition

I pledge to foster Peace and Love every day

In doing so, I heal myself, my country and the world

With One Love, One Heart at a time.

PROJECT 2 – Villages as Businesses – Sustaining and Enhancing Caribbean Communities through Entrepreneurship

Diana McIntyre-Pike, President of Countrystyle Community Tourism Network and the International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT) Caribbean chapter has announced: THE VILLAGES AS BUSINESSES programme as an economic model for sustaining and enhancing Jamaican and Caribbean communities through Community Tourism. This innovative initiative has as its Patrons:  Louis D’Amore, IIPT Founder & President, & Ambassador Aloun Assamba, Jackie Minott CEO Jamaica Standard Products, Spanish Court Hotel Kingston, Goblin Hill Hotel Portland, National Association of Jamaicans and Supportive Organization (NAJASO) Eric Reverence, International Christian Worship Leader, Song writer, Worship, Evangelist and a Radio presenter based in London, UK , Michael Esposito, Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) with the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD)

The Villages as Businesses programme was developed to create economic opportunities for community persons interested in investing in their communities by offering community tourism products and attractions that build on unique natural, cultural and human capital.

It aims to market authentic lifestyles, people and experiences. It views the tourism product of the Caribbean as relating not only to specific ‘resort areas’ or traditional tourism establishments, but to the entire country. All participating Villages/Communities are encouraged to stimulate entrepreneurship and identify unique opportunities, such as natural, man-made or traditional cultural practices, within their local environment.

The Caribbean is the most tourism dependent region in the world.  If it is not managed in a sustainable way, it will compromise the future.   The Village Programme sees communities as destinations essential to the diversification and sustainability of the industry.  Community Tourism, the Village Community Experience tours and Homestays respond to a growing demand for more responsible and mutually beneficial relationships between host and visitor.  They open up new niches, most notably for the nature-culture-adventure-wellness traveller and allow visitors to enjoy the community lifestyle while on vacation, which is marketed as ‘the community experiences of the Caribbean’. This offers tailor-made packages and tours depending on the visitors’ interest and budget.

IIPT Caribbean/Countrystyle’s vision is thus to see communities as destinations for responsible visitors and for Community Tourism to be the vehicle for sustainable development and prosperity. Villages hold the destiny of the country within them. Every community and every citizen is a potential tourism business partner with the chance to improve earnings and become empowered and educated through involvement in the expanded industry (value chain). However, to become an effective partner, every community and every citizen needs to understand how to value their natural, cultural, heritage and human assets and to add value to them through conservation, creativity and education.

Community tourism and the Villages as Businesses programme therefore, offer a powerful and practical vehicle for training in hospitality skills, small business management, product development and marketing.  They also reinforce the need to foster awareness of the value and care of natural, cultural and heritage assets and to protect food security, healthy cuisine and lifestyles focused on wellness. IIPT Caribbean/Countrystyle takes a strongly participatory approach to developing the Villages as Businesses Programme, encouraging citizens to participate in and benefit from their own development by mobilizing their own resources, defining their own needs and making their own decisions about how to meet them.

The objective is to build relationships, mobilize community participation and creativity under an agreed vision.  IIPT Caribbean/Countrystyle sees particularly fruitful opportunities in the Villages as Businesses Programme for the youth of the Caribbean in terms of building human capital: building self-esteem, skills and capacity. Then there is the need to form partnerships and international links for sharing solutions that can be translated into ‘on the ground’ implementation.

It is envisaged that when the economics of village living is strong a number of positive things will happen for the community folk, such as: improved living conditions; reduced migration abroad or to larger towns; conservation and enhancement of the value of natural and man-made beauty or cultural heritage; preservation of the environment and the traditions; increased attractiveness of Jamaica and the Caribbean region as a destination for visitors that want unique vacation experiences; increased visitor respect for the traditions of others; and improvement in the overall Jamaican tourism product.

DEVELOPING ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION IN COMMUNITY-BASED TOURISM – through COUNTRYSTYLE VILLAGES AS BUSINESSES

Diana McIntyre-Pike, President/Founder, Countrystyle Community Tourism Network/Villages As Businesses and President, International Institute For Peace Through Tourism (IIPT) Caribbean Chapter

Definition of Community Tourism

Community Tourism was developed to assist communities in realizing the direct benefits of tourism in their own environment.  Community Tourism is holistic.  It is not a niche form of tourism but provides for every niche market in an unconventional model.  It depends on the appreciation and quality of indigenous resources to generate income and provides a tangible incentive and practical vehicle for community development.

At the first International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT) Caribbean Conference, held in Montego Bay in 2003, it was agreed that “community tourism is community development through tourism.”

Objective and Purpose of the Villages as Businesses programme

The objective and purpose of the Countrystyle Villages as Businesses programme reside in the fundamental vision of Countrystyle, which is to empower and develop communities on a sustainable basis by helping them realise their natural culture, talents, passions and potential, and dynamically packaging, marketing and exposing each individual community to the world as a unique destination (product) within their general region.

The Mission of CCTN’s Villages As Businesses programme

The Mission is to support the development of community tourism in Jamaica and internationally and to educate all stakeholders of its importance to the cause of peace, poverty alleviation and sustainable development and to offer local and foreign visitors diverse ‘community experience’ vacations and tours.

How we Work

We achieve success with our member communities by building relationships, mobilizing community participation and sharing a vision that encourages creativity and collaboration, motivates everyone to seek economic opportunities within their local environment and stimulates entrepreneurship.  We encourage communities to see visitor interest and expenditure as a catalyst for growing the broader economic activity, rather than a new source of revenue to be relied on.

While we discourage the creation of inauthentic attractions, we seek to diversify the tourism products and services we offer, and through this diversification, enhance our ability to apply to the varying market niches in the wide tourism marketplace.

Three Guiding Principles of the Countrystyle Villages As Businesses programme

1)   Think Globally, Act Locally – with our distinct local flavours and cultures, we can create products which can be marketed throughout Jamaica, the Caribbean and the rest of the world. An example is the idea of ‘community theatres’ featuring the local talents while teaching community values and resources to both communities and visitors

2)     Independence and Creativity – local citizens can and should decide for themselves what their Village product, theme or niche market should be.  A village could choose three products, or two villages could combine to produce a single product.  While government can provide technical support, marketing and other assistance, it needs to facilitate individual plans rather than competing or requiring standardization.

3)     Fostering Human Resources – the ultimate goal of this movement is the development of human resources.  No success can come about without visionary local leaders.  It is important to develop a local community that responds creatively when challenged with difficult times.

The Community Lifestyle Experience Tours

The Countrystyle Community Tourism Network (CCTN) has successfully developed a dynamic marketing theme for communities The Community Lifestyle Experience offers local and foreign visitors a diverse vacation and tour experience anywhere in the Caribbean which promotes its nature, heritage, culture, music, cuisine and entertainment.  CCTN helps villages design and package the Community Lifestyle Experience for tour operators, travel agents and visitors.  The packages take into consideration visitor interests and budgets and can include airport transfers, accommodation, meals, tours or vacations, community/host guide service, escort/guide rent-a-car and bus transportation.

Villages gain income directly from visitors through tours, homestay accommodation, entertainment and meals.   But they also benefit because the tours include community businesses as interesting things to do and support, adding to the diverse experience provided to local and international visitors.

Our tours are demonstrating a growing market for authentic community Lifestyle experiences, even among the guests of large resort hotels.  Visitors also welcome the opportunity to assist communities by participating in our “Adopt a Village” and “Pick a Project’ programmes and contributing to COMTRUST, our community tourism development Trust  which will be launched in 2019.

Conclusion

While community tourism has much to offer a local population, it is essential that the potential of the situation is carefully analysed and evaluated before embarking on the development of a significant project or promoting a community-based tourism strategy.

The Countrystyle Community Tourism Network’s Villages As Businesses programme will ensure that the villages are developed in a sustainable way to protect the natural and cultural environment and improve the quality of its citizens through community tourism.
